Welding Automation for Productivity and Profitability

While producing high quality welds, the welding experts has to be careful about the precision of the welded product. Welding Automation entails the use of machines to perfect the precision needed for high quality weld jobs. Sometimes, some of the high precision welding jobs also needs to be done in a very short period of time, which makes it all the more difficult to keep up the quality of the welding and therefore, Welding Automation is used widely nowadays. The Welding Automation systems or machines easily integrates to the production environment and enormously cuts the risk of uneven and inconsistent welds, which eventually leads to increased productivity. This approach has made the welding based companies more environment friendly. With the advent of the Welding Automation today, there is no need of sending welding jobs abroad for better precision. Even if you run a small company and there is a paucity of funds, there is always the option to lease or rent the welding equipment’s.

Quality Welds are Critical

Welding is explained as one of the most complex process in the manufacturing industry. While both manual and automated welding has their advantages and disadvantages, most of the companies which use welding, is welcoming automation in welding. For many companies, manual welding is still the best alternative. However, for companies which deal with complex joints in welding, automated welding is recommended. Automated welding is also a better option when soldering needs to be done repeatedly.

Semi-Automatic vs Full Automatic

Welding Automation can be broadly classified in to two parts, semi-automatic welding and fully automatic welding. In semi-automatic welding, the loading of the parts into the welding fixture is done manually. The next step that is the control of the torch and the other controls are done by a weld controller. The parameters are set in to the preset and then the control is completely in the hands of weld controller. Once the fuse is done, the operator who is in charge, removes the completed job, and repeats the process all over again.
In fully automatic welding, a customized set up is made, and everything from the loading of the raw work-piece to completing the weld is done by this customized set up. The advantage of a fully automated welding, is that, before unloading the completed work piece, it checks if the welding went good. The system can also be designed for one or more quality checks.

Benefits of Welding Automation

The broad classification of the advantages provided by Welding Automation are,

  • Less labor costs
  • Less wastage of materials
  • Increased productivity
  • Quality integration

The quality achieved by the automated welding machines are great. By eliminating the human factor from the welding process, time is also saved and the production is also increased. With high speed manufacturing and easy set-up, automated welding is the future of welding.

The apparatus needed for automated welding includes turning rolls, cutting machines, bed rollers, manipulators, positioners, remote monitoring etc. A soldering positioner is one of the most important apparatus in automated welding. It helps the workers work ergonomically, who otherwise work in very stressful conditions.
