To the south of Okinawa there is a beautiful illuminated cave named Gyokusendo Cave,this cave occupies the second largest position among these series of caves in Japan.Inside the cave it is well maintained and the walking paths are comfortable and well lit.It is located in the southern park of Okinawa and it is must visit spot,we should not leave any chance to approach this even if it is a rainy day or dark clouds are covered.As we are about to enter into the caves just a few meters while entering we feel like we have entered into a air conditioned room.The cool breeze inside the caves make it feel comfortable and the stainless steel stairs and walkways make the journey through the caves more convenient.In fact they feel a bit slippery in some spots where moisture has accumulated.
Location and Approach:
Gyokusendo Cave is located under Okinawa World theme park in Nanjo City.People who want to visit Gyokusendo cave and enjoy its beauty can have a long walk through the cave along an 850 meter long walkway that is built just above the cavern floor.Many displays are provided within the cave.Few benches are also provided to sit on along the way and the most attraction for this cave is the clear underground river running along the pathway.The cave may not provide entrance for everyone as the humidity hovers around 80% and the pathway is extremely narrow at many points.This park is located on route 17 in Nanjo City.We can approach this park bye means of a bus.Available bus lines for this location are 51, 54, 81, 82 and 83.These buses stop at the Gyokusendo mae stop near the Okinawa park.
Gyokusendo caves is one of the biggest Caves in Okinawa,Japan,it is also the second biggest cave system in Japan after Akiyoshido cave.These Gyokusendo Caves generally called as illuminated caves led their formation over 300,000 years,the cave length of these illuminated caves is about 5 kilometers,but only 1 kilometer and less than is open to the public in the form of walkways and few other accessibility.Okinawa village is the fifth largest island in Japan excluding the disputed islands north of Hokkaido.The island covers an area of 1,201.03 square kilometers which is roughly 640 kilometers south of the rest of Japan.
The caves interior is made up of limestone being deep under the earth.People visiting this cave can have an access of 890 meters of well lit and safe passageways.Inside the cave there are warning signs that instruct visitors not to shout or whistle inside this illuminating caves.This cave inhibits some of the extremely fragile and sensitive stalactites like the stone features that are hanging from the ceiling of caves that resemble ice hangings in ice caves.These hangings are hundreds in number and could fall at times also.
The walking route in Gyoksuendo cave is along a metal walkway with guardrails and is easy and safe,but at times they feel little slippery too.Inside the cave there are many arrangements done by the Okinawa world being most popular visit in Okinawa.They provided colored lights to get illuminated effect,they also provided wide range of impressive displays as well as the small waterfalls and pools of water also look spectacular.There are many Stalactites visible in this cave and they grow at a rate of 1 mm per year.Few of these Stalactites are several meters long and have a great look being in numerous amount underneath the cave and just above the walkway.The cave is estimated to be over 300,000 years old.Motion detectors are provided and they control some of the lighting while we have a walk thorugh and looks amazing with wide range of colours with clear water flows and cool breeze.
Okinawa World is not only a place for visiting Gyokusendou caves but also some attractions are there in this Okinawa world i.e., the culture of Okinawa.There is a Castle called Kingdom Castle it has several traditional Okinawan houses and buildings.In these buildings we can find many traditional crafts like dying,string instrument,paper making and many more.We can also enjoy the local dance performances in Okinawa world.There is a Museum park in this village it is also an interesting place to visit.This Habu Museum park consists of many poisonous snakes.It is a dangerous and adventurous spot to visit in Okinawa.Many of the people get bitten by these snakes every year.
The cave has only 900 meters available for public.The stalactites in the cave are numerous and are over a million stalactites in the cave which are the largest of this type in whole Japan.The temperature inside the cave looks pretty cool and is about 21 degrees centigrade throughout the year.It is very interesting place and exciting place to visit.We can find souvenir shops at the end of the cave where we can find traditional Japanese costumes.One can buy it and make it as a visit remembering.We can also have them for rent and we can have some pictures in that Japanese traditional costume during One’s visit and can have few pictures for 500 yen itself.
