Hunchback of Notre Dame,France is one of the popular and greatest monument in the capital of French and is recorded in the World Heritage list.It is a unforgettable masterpiece with gothic architecture.

Location and Architecture:

The Notre Dame is situated in the geographical and popular historical centre of Paris  at the edge of the Ile de la Cite.This is no doubt the symbolic centre of Paris

The Hunchback of Notre Dame is designed by Maurice de Sully and the construction of this large church known as cathedral started in 1163 and the construction took bearly two centuries to complete which was in 1345.The Notre Dame cathedral was also made restoration in 19th century by the French architect-Viollet-leoDuc.Even after its restoration,the monument looks very splendid like the previous one. Notre Dame has been a target for the Parisian revolutionaries due to the good relationship existed between the French monarchy and the Catholic Church.

In 1238,the Saint Louis King bought the Christ’s Crown of Thorns frim Constantinople and later in 1806,the Crown was transferred to Notre Dame where it can be viewed every first friday of the month.

Notre Dame is not only a masterpiece of the French Gothic Architecture but it is also the Catholic  ceremonial focus from since seven centuries holding the amazing interior which holds about 6000 people at a time.Also,there are many main entrances with each differently designed with statues which were once colored and later on lose its color.Also,the interior has the most amazing 7800 pipe organ which is not working properly after it has been restored.

The infrastructure of the cathedral is very innovative and modern.The architecture of the Notre Dame has five transversal parts.It has many glass window which are stained and also rose windows where two of them are 13 meter wide which makes them the largest one in the Europe.The towers of the cathedral are 69 meter high and many carved grotesques and bells which are inspired by many famous tales of Victor Hugos.

At the time of the revolution,the statues from Gallery of the cathedral which has Kings nd many major portals were destroyed by the people.Later,the cathedral have become the property of the civil authorities.

Notre Dame as known is an old historical monument which celebrates its birthday on March 23 which completes its 850 years of establishment with nine new bronze bells and an original bell.The new bells which replaced the original bells have been melted down and those were used to make cannons at the time of the French Revolution.The new bronze bells has been casted inn Normandy using Middle Age techniques.

The West Facade approach to the Notre Dame has two towers risen over 200 feet.The exterior appearance is famous for its simplicity which consists of extraordinary features like the large Rose Window which forms a surrounding statue of the Blessed Virgin holding the infant Jesus who is in conversation with two angels.

There is a gallery of Kings below the Rose Window and also some entrance portals with a central port known as Last Judgement Portal.Every portal has nice sculptures which is popular among the tourists.The stained glass is treated as a treasure of the Cathedral especially the West Rose window and the designs in  these glass windows are mostly dated from the 13th century.

The employment of flying buttresses is made by Notre Dame which is renowned as the first cathedral to pull up.These wing elevated curves are transferred from cathedral to the buttresses  outside the building.These flying buttresses can be viewed along the east of the Cathedral.

The Notre Dame Cathedral is really an remarkable monument mainly for history lovers.Photography is allowed here where visitors tend to take pictures as memories but not a flash one should be used.They will be out bound by its history,infrastructure,its attractions and everything.This is really an amazing experience to watch the cathedral.It is also very beautiful when the nine bells are ringing on religious events which is a sight to watch.Even though the line to the entrance is very long,it is worth to wait to admire its beauty later.
