Jeju Island which was formerly known as the Cheju Island is located in the southwest of Korean peninsula. Jeju Island is a volcanic island in the shape of an oval that measures 73km from west to east and 31 km from north to south. Its capital is jeju city. As jeju is Korea’s most southern region, its weather is relatively warm throughout the year compared to the mainland. Jeju Island is also referred to as Samdado Island which means “three many” because of its abundance of women, rocks and wind. Wind from the ocean blows steadily throughout the year with a rhythm of its own. The previous volcanic eruption has flooded the island with assorted beautiful rocks which are to be admired.
Main tourist attractions in the islands
There are wide ranges of activities you can choose to do in the island like hiking on Halla-san or Olle-gil, catching the sunrises and sunsets over the ocean, riding horses, meeting the world famous K-drama stars or just lying lazily and gazing around the sandy beaches.
Jeju Island has three main world heritage sites which showcase its natural beauty and volcanic legacy. The three sites are namely Hallasan national park,Seongsan Ilchulbong Peak and the Geomunoreaum Lava tube system.
Hallasan national park: Hallasan Mountain was formed from volcanic activities millions of years ago. It is a shield shaped mountain with a lake called Baekrokdam Lake and countless small parasitic volcanoes. The mountain is surrounded by over 360 small volcanoes and 2,000 plant species making it a breathtaking area.
Seongsan Ilchubong Peak: it lies at the far east of the island and is as a result of previous volcanic history. One side of the peak rises out of the sea and the other side slopes down to the countryside. It is famous for its geological wonder as well as the best place to watch sunrise in Korea, getting its name as “Sunrise peak”.
Geomunoreaum Lava Tube System: it is the largest lava tube system in jeju and is made up of Manjanggul cave, Gimnyeonggul cave, bengduigul cave, yongcheongul cave and dangcheomuldonggul cave. It is well preserved and can still be seen in original condition.
In jeju where ever you go, you can spot small volcanic mountains rising from the fields and farmlands. These are called “oreums”and there are over 365 of them spread out over the Hallasan Mountain. Few of the famous oreums are Saebyeol oreum, Darangshi Oreum and Yongnuni Oreum.
There are magnificent waterfalls around the islands to complement the geographical beauty. The three most beautiful waterfalls are Cheonjiyeon falls,Jeongbang falls and Cheonjeyeon falls. The falls e surrounded by variety of flora and fauna. They create a romantic mood in the evening because of the surrounding paths and the silent atmosphere.
Jeju islands are packed with museums and theme parks which are attraction for all the tourists. The range may amuse you! You will surely encounter one of them wherever you go and they can be very fun to roam around.
Jeju national museum showcases pieces related to culture and history of the islands.Jeju folk village museum gives the tourists idea of the daily living of locals in 19th century. The teddy bear museum in jeju can amuse you as the tourists are greeted by over 1000 teddy bears! There is also a chocolate museum which tells the tourists story of the chocolates and also gives a chance for them to see the chocolate making process and get a sample.
The “dol harbang” is a stone statue seen every in the island. The park shows stone grandfather at his best with artistic presentations. It reveals simple expressions blended naturally with the island.
Yeomiji botanical garden is the home for diverse tropical and subtropical plants beautifully laid out in themes. It is the main botanical garden of jeju.

You can also visit the islands surrounding the jeju islands. These are udo island,marado island and Biyangdo island.
What is a holiday without food? But don’t worry jeju island is very famous for the varieties of sea food available! This island has a long history of fishing and is hence famous for dishes made with fresh and savory sea food. Most of the food use mackerel, hair tail fish, abalone, and tilefish caught from the waters surrounding the island. Famed black pork is a trademark dish of this island and is famous for its chewy taste. There are number of dishes using horsemeat which is available only in this island.
The mild and pleasant weather of Jeju Island is perfect for growing citrus fruits. Gamggyul is a fruit which was served to the royal families previously. It is the main product of Jeju Island and the sweet taste of this fruit lingers on ones tongue. Hallabong is a hybrid citrus fruit which is known for its large size and extremely smooth and sweet taste. You can also find lot of other native foods in this island. Do not miss the kimchi which is the traditional fermented Korean dish made of vegetables with variety of seasonings.
