History:

The Telemark Canal, in reality two canals linked together (The Norsjø-Skien Canal (1861) and The Bandak-Norsjø Canal / Bandak Canal (1892)), is a string of pearls, and one of the “must-see” attractions of Norway. This canal connects Skien to Dalen in southern Norway by linking lakes that pass through a series of 18 locks. In Europe it is considered as the eighth wonder at the time it was finished. The Telemark canal was hewn out of the rocks by hand well over 100 years ago. 500 men had worked for five years to dynamite their way through the rocks. The Telemark canal stretches 105 kimlometers from Skien to Dalen. There are six municipalities which are known as Canal Municipalities. The Telemark canal consists of two lock complexes. The norsjo-Skien canal, which was completed in 1861, is the first stage. The Bandak-Norsjo canal, which was opened 31 years later, opens the connection between Norsjo and the Western Lakes to Dalen. The eight locks connect the sea to the inland. The canal became known as “the fast route” between Eastern and Western Norway and was also the most important transport route between upper and lower Telemark for people, domestic animals, goods and timber.
