“And the big wheel keep on turning neon burning up above And I’m just high on the world Come on and take a low ride with me girl On the tunnel of love!” Our world is an enigma. Nature has its own arsenal of paints and brushes that it has generally used in indulging our world with charm, romance and quiet mystique. There are imposing structures and gorgeous views. And there are breathtaking sculptures. And then there are some places are so beautiful and peaceful that they nearly scream out ‘Love is in the air’. About 25 kilometers North West of the Ukrainian town called Rvine lies a quaint little village. Its name is Klevan. The village of Klevan is endowed with nature’s mastery and the locals enjoy the picturesque scenes surrounding their home. Between the two World Wars it was a part of Poland. Close to this beautiful village lies one of the most romantic spots on earth- the Tunnel of Love. Legend has it that if you walk down the tunnel hand in hand with your true love and make a wish, your wish will come true and the two of you will be bound eternally with the strongest of bonds.
The Tunnel of Love is actually a hardly used industrial rail track. Trees have been cleared out from the forest and a rail track has been laid. A train runs on this 3 km log track three times a day, carrying wood to a nearby fibre board factory. Green trees have grown in a peculiar fashion all around the track and have entwined together to form a leafy shade over the ‘tunnel’. The picturesque tunnel is a beautiful example of the stunning visual ecstasy that can be created with nature’s beauty taking over a manmade canvas. The trees take on different hues with the change of seasons. In the summer, the rich green leaves are all gentle. The bright sunrays playing peekaboo through the leaves overhead are perhaps nature’s own way of expressing the warm caress of bright young love.
And in autumn, the tunnel looks forlorn, as if in wait for a lover who has set out on adventures to take on the world. And then comes winter. The leaves are frosted; icicles sparkle like shards of diamond. The tunnel of love waits for the reunion of lovers.
Then shines the sun, the ice is thawed, the birds sing. New leaves grow on the young branches of trees as spring comes singing its own love song. And it is nearly as if nature is celebrating the reunion of the proverbial lovers, with bright flowers and butterflies and a fragrant spirit in the air.
