The Grand Canyon is among the most popular amazing structures across the world. The state of Arizona is blessed to have this structure which is sliced by the Colorado River. The Grand Canyon is 277 miles i.e. 446 km long steep-sided canyon and is almost a mile deep. The canyon comes within the Grand Canyon National Park and was managed by the Hualapai Tribal Nation and the Havasupai Tribe. The famous three Indian reservations named the Hualapai, the Havasupai and the Navajo are today a part of the Grand Canyon National Park.
Even the President Theodore Roosevelt likes to visit the canyon particularly on occasions to enjoy the beautiful scenery the place offers. He was also a supporter of protection of the Grand Canyon Area. Many researches were done in that area and according to some of the previous researches the age of the Grand Canyon should be 5-6 million but later it was estimated that the river established its progression by the canyon 17 million years ago. But still this finding is debatable. Thus, nothing can be said about the years of existence of that place. It is also said that the Native Americans inhabited the place thousands years ago and after building settlements within the canyon, they are living there in their caves. Some people called the pueblo people consider the Grand Canyon a holy place and they even made tours to it. A man from Spain named Garcia Lopez was the first person who visited the Grand Canyon in 1540.
The U.S. government in the early 1800s spent a lot in the maintenance of the Grand Canyon. They began to explore and map the Southwest area which includes the Grand Canyon. In 1893, the Grand Canyon was titled as a Forest Reserve and later the government made it a National Monument. Until 1919 the Grand Canyon did not receive the title of a National Park. But today it is widely famous and occupies a land of 1 million acres. The number of visitors is close to 5 million each year.
The Grand Canyon is not the deepest and even not the widest canyon in the world. The deepest canyon in the world is in Nepal and is named as the Kali Gandaki Gorge. And the widest in the world is the Capertee Valley in Australia. However, this big fissure is popular for its elaborate and colorful landscape and its visually awesome size in the Colorado Plateau. The place is significantly known for the beauty of the rocks in the walls of the Grand Canyon. The walls of the Grand Canyon are made of quite thick arrangement of some ancient rocks which are beautifully visible and preserved.
The thing that we must know about the Grand Canyon is the variation of its weather. The weather at the Grand Canyon fluctuates according to elevation. The forested borders of that area receive winter snowfall but when we talk about the area in the Inner Gorge along the Colorado River the temperatures is normal and is quite similar to that found around Tucson. Annually the extensive precipitation occurs twice especially in winter when there is a shift in the seasonal pattern but normally the weather is dry. In summer the weather is quite opposite. Some moisture will be seen in the southeast causing localized and melodramatic thunderstorms. On an average the content of precipitation will be around 16 inches on the South Edges and will be higher on the North Edges( mainly around 27 inches with 144 inches of snowfall).
The air at the Grand Canyon is found to be the cleanest air in the United States. The quality of air is sometimes get affected by some actions such as dust storms and forest fires which generally occurs in the Southwest area. There are considerable effects on the quality of air and that are mostly from the organics and the sulfates in the soils. The main origin of these sulfates is the continuous emissions from Arizona’s copper smelter area. In south California the urban emissions also add to the content of the sulfates. Forest fires, vehicle emissions, VOCs from the surrounding forests and long range transport from urban regions are the main cause of creation of Organic particles. Road dust and windy conditions create airborne soils. Many other things also affect the air of the Grand Canyon these things include the black carbon content resulting from forest fires and the nitrates being carried from the urban regions.
Now, if we talk about the greenery of the Grand Canyon then there is much more to talk about. There are about 1,737 vascular plants, 64 species of moss, 167 species of fungi and even 195 species of lichen in the Grand Canyon National Park. This variety of species found at the Grand Canyon is all because of the elevation change of about 8,000 foot of the Colorado River. This elevation change is upto the peak point on the North Edge. The park owns a dozen of endemxtU_lants within its boundaries. A little of 10% flora of the park is exotic. Even the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service gave sixty-three pants of the Grand Canyon special status.
The Grand Canyon is among the Seven Wonder in the World. And it deserves to be the one because the place is naturally so beautiful and it can be seen in the pictures also. Thus, it will be a breathtaking experience to watch this place and trust me you will never forget the view of its landscape.
